The Skywalker saga began with the original trilogy and continued with the prequel trilogy. Following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Wars was introduced to yet another generation with sequels and spinoffs. When Disney+ launched in 2020, it came with multiple 4k versions of the original trilogy, which are, of course, a far cry from how the films were viewed on home video decades ago. The galaxy far, far away thrives on Disney+ with animated and live-action shows including The Bad BatchThe MandalorianThe Book of Boba FettNow, one lucky bidder can go back in time to where it all began.

Auction house Goldin Auctions is hosting an online sale featuring a handful of vintage VHS tapes, one of which is 1984 first release of Star WarsThe copy includes a “Gray Tape-Head,” a “First Edition Stereo Only” red label, a “1984 Sleeve” and “First Edition CBS/Fox Watermarks.” There are also two other 1984 Star Wars VHS copies for sale and a sealed copy of the Star Wars 10-Year Anniversary Original Trilogy Set in Trilogy Case, which is expected to go between $10,000 and $20,000. While Star Wars was released in theaters in 1977, it wasn’t until 1982 that the film became available on VHS for rental only. In 1984, it became available for purchase. The edition for sale was previously sold at auction for $57,600. This may seem like an absurd amount of money for a VHS, especially considering home viewers are already on the brink of outgrowing DVDs. However, increasingly rare items related to major franchises remain extremely valuable among collectors. For example, a first edition copy of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone sold for $37,000 at an auction last year. On top of that, the original Star Wars trilogy has been edited and re-released countless times, making an original cut a valuable collector’s item.

Who Arrests Doctor Strange? MCU Illuminati & Professor X Link Explained

Since Star Wars’ original home release, Lucas and company have made numerous changes to the original trilogy. The most controversial example of this concerns a change made to a scene in the first film in which Han Solo is confronted by the bounty hunter Greedo in the Mos Eisley cantina. In the original version of the scene, Han shoots Greedo dead before the Rodian even raises his weapon. To make Han seem less like a cold-blooded killer, the 1997 “Special Edition” was edited to show Greedo shooting first. In the 2004 DVD release, the scene was re-edited to show both of the characters firing shots simultaneously before multiple frames were removed from the 2011 Blu-ray. Today, Greedo yells “Maclunky!” in a scene that’s even harder to follow. Suffice to say, in the tape that’s up for auction, Han shoots first.
